ORA-12532: TNS:invalid argument

Trying to run sqlplus to logon to a database, the following error occurs:

$ sqlplus scott

SQL*Plus: Release 12.2.0.1.0 Production on Tue Nov 14 14:46:12 2022

ORA-12532: TNS:invalid argument

CAUSE

User password contains character “@”
